Creully is a small town that used to be a separate commune (a type of local area or town) in the Calvados area of Normandy, a region in northwestern France. On January 1, 2017, Creully joined with other nearby towns to form a new, larger commune called Creully sur Seulles.

The main town square in Creully is named after a brave Canadian soldier, Lieutenant Bill McCormick. He was part of the 1st Hussars Canadian Armoured Regiment. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, his tank was the only Allied tank to reach its planned goal. After passing through Creully, his tank made it to the important Caen-Bayeux road. This was a big achievement during the D-Day landings in World War II.

Life in Creully

Creully is a quiet place with a rich history. It's known for its beautiful old buildings and peaceful countryside. The town is a great example of a traditional French village.

What is a Commune?

In France, a "commune" is like a local government area, similar to a city or town. It's the smallest unit of local government. Each commune has its own mayor and council. When communes merge, it means they join together to form a bigger area, often to share resources and services more easily.

Creully's Role in History

Creully played a small but important part in World War II. The D-Day landings were a huge military operation where Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin freeing France from occupation. Lieutenant McCormick's success in reaching his objective showed the bravery of the soldiers involved.
