Cris's Football Journey: Club Career Highlights
Starting Out: Early Club Days
Cris began his football career in São Paulo. He played for Corinthians from 1995 to 1998. After that, he joined Cruzeiro. While at Cruzeiro, he played his first game for the Brazilian national team. This was on April 4, 1999, against the United States. Brazil won that match 7–0.
In 2000, a Brazilian magazine called Placar named Cris the best player in his position. They gave him the Silver Ball award. In 2002, he moved to Europe to play for Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. However, this move was not very successful. He found it hard to get used to his new team and life there. The next year, he went back to Brazil. He rejoined Cruzeiro and helped them win the Brazilian championship that year.
Becoming a Star at Lyon
In August 2004, Cris left Brazil again. He moved to Lyon in France. Lyon paid about €3.5 million for him. Cris was known as a tough defender. He quickly became a key player in Lyon's defense.
In his first season with Lyon, the club won the league championship. Cris was chosen for the best team of the year in Ligue 1. His second season was also excellent. He was named "Gold Star" by France Football magazine. The newspaper L'Equipe said he was the best defender of the 2005–06 season. His fellow players also voted him into the Ligue 1 Team of the Year again. Because of his great performance, his salary increased. He also extended his contract with Lyon until 2010, and later until 2011.
For the 2007–08 season, the new Lyon manager, Alain Perrin, made Cris the team captain. On August 11, 2007, Cris got injured in a game against Toulouse. He tore ligaments in his right knee. Cris returned to play on March 1, 2008. This was in a 1–0 win against Lille. On March 17, 2012, Cris had another injury. He hurt his calf in a 1–0 win against Saint-Étienne. This injury kept him out for a month.
Short Stays: Galatasaray, Grêmio, and Vasco da Gama
On September 3, 2012, after eight years with Lyon, Cris joined Turkish team Galatasaray. He signed a contract for one year, with an option for another. He scored his first goal for Galatasaray on October 28, 2012. This was in a 3–0 win against Kayserispor. However, after only four months, Galatasaray ended Cris's contract.
He then returned to Brazil. On January 3, 2013, Cris signed with Brazilian team Grêmio. He joined the club to replace Gilberto Silva.
On July 31, 2013, Cris signed with Vasco da Gama. His first game was a 2–3 loss against Grêmio. Cris left Vasco da Gama in January 2014 when his contract was not renewed.
Playing for Brazil: International Career
Cris played 17 games for the Brazilian national team. His first game was in July 2001. Cris could not play in the 2002 World Cup because of an ankle injury. He was part of the Brazilian team that won their seventh Copa América title in 2004.
His great club performance also earned him a spot in the national team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. On November 13, 2009, he was called back to the national team. This was for friendly games against England and Oman. This call-up was a surprise, as he had not played for the team since March 2006.
Cris scored only one goal for Brazil. It was in a 6–0 friendly win against Bolivia on January 31, 2002.
