Cristina Hoyos Panadero (born 13 June 1946) is a famous Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer, and actress. She was born in Seville, Spain. After a very successful career around the world, she started her own dance company in 1988. Her company first performed at the Rex Theatre in Paris. Cristina also played a big part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Cristina Hoyos's Dance Journey

Early Steps in Dance

Cristina Hoyos began dancing when she was just twelve years old. She performed in a children's show called Galas Juveniles. Her teachers, Adelita Domingo and Enrique el Cojo, helped her discover her deep love for dance.

Dancing with Antonio Gades

In 1969, Cristina joined the ballet company of Antonio Gades. She worked with them for more than twenty years. During this time, she traveled the world, showing off her amazing dance skills. She also starred in a famous film series. These films included Blood Wedding, Carmen, and El amor brujo. In 1983, Cristina played the main role of Carmen in a ballet in Paris. Her performance was highly praised.

Starting Her Own Dance Company

After 1988, Cristina Hoyos appeared in several films and TV shows. These included Juncal and Antártida. In 1989, her new dance company performed their first show, Sueños Flamencos, at the Paris Festival. A year later, her flamenco company made history. They were the first flamenco group to perform at the Paris Opera House. They also performed at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. Cristina also helped create the dances for Carmen at London's Covent Garden.

Big Performances and New Shows

At the Seville Expo '92, Cristina performed in shows like Yerma. She also danced at the opening and closing ceremonies in Barcelona. In 1992, she brought her show Caminos Andaluces to Paris.

In 1996, Cristina choreographed Cuadro Flamenco for the Opéra de Nice. She also helped create the dances for the film The Hunchback. Later that year, she launched her new show Arsa y Toma. This show featured beautiful costumes designed by Christian Lacroix.

In 1999, her company debuted Al Compás del Tiempo. Cristina also choreographed The Fígaro Marriages. In 2001, she played Carmen again in Carmen 2, le retour.

Leading the Andalusian Ballet

In 2002, Cristina presented Tierra Adentro. This show won an award for Best Performance. She also performed Yerma at the Alhambra for a huge audience. In 2004, Cristina Hoyos was chosen to lead the Andalusian Ballet of Flamenco. A year later, she presented A Trip to the South. In 2006, she toured the world with her show Romancero Gitano. This show was based on the works of the Spanish writer Federico García Lorca.

Cristina Hoyos's Personal Life

Cristina Hoyos is married to Juan Antonio Jiménez. They first met when they were both dancing in the Antonio Gades Ballet Company.

In 1997, Cristina was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had surgery and made a full recovery. Her experience was shared in a book called ¡Ánimo p'alante!. This book was written by Ángel López del Castillo, a journalist.
