About the Crkvenica River
The Crkvenica River is about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) long. It starts high up in the mountains and flows into the Vrbanja River.
Where Does it Start?
The Crkvenica River begins its journey between two mountains: Očauš and Šipraška brda. It starts at a height of about 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) above sea level. The river flows towards the southeast. It helps drain the northern slopes of the Dinaric mountain range. The Crkvenica River ends when it joins the Vrbanja River in a place called Šiprage, near Kotor Varoš.
Old Water Mills
The Crkvenica River was once famous for its many water mills. These mills used the power of the flowing water to grind grain. In the 1950s, there were about 18 of these mills along the river.
Ancient Stone Monuments
Along the banks of the Crkvenica River, you can find special stone monuments called stećci. These are old medieval tombstones. They are a reminder of the Bogomil people who lived in this area around the 12th century.
The stećci were first found where the Crkvenica and Vrbanja rivers meet. Some of these stones were later used to build walls for nearby buildings. People might have believed these stones had special, even magical, powers. One of the best-preserved stećci is still in its original spot. It is partly covered by the water of the Vrbanja River.
