Stećak (pronounced STEH-chak) are special, large stone monuments. They are like gravestones from the Middle Ages in a region called Bosnia. The plural form is Stećci (STEH-tsee).
Most of these unique stone monuments are found in modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. You can also find smaller numbers of them in nearby countries. These include the border areas of Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia.
About 60,000 Stećci are located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Another 10,000 are spread across Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. They are found at over 3,300 different places. Sadly, more than 90% of these ancient stones are not in good condition today.
