Communities in Croton Township
Croton Township is home to several small communities. These are often called unincorporated communities. This means they are not officially separate towns or cities with their own local government.
- Croton is a community within the township. It was first settled in 1840. The community grew around a new sawmill. It was first known as Muskegon Fork. Later, it was called Stearns Mill, then Croton in 1850. Croton was officially mapped out in 1854. It became a village in 1870 but later stopped being an official village.
- Croton Heights is another community. It is located along the Muskegon River.
- Riverview is a community found just northeast of Croton. It is also along the Muskegon River.
- Tift Corner is a community in the southern part of the township. It is located along the M-82 highway.

Croton Township covers a total area of about 36.38 square miles (94.22 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 33.70 square miles (87.28 square kilometers). The rest is water, which is about 2.68 square miles (6.94 square kilometers).
A very important landmark here is the Croton Dam. It is built on the Muskegon River and is located right in the township.
