Neptune Beach: A Fun Place Long Ago

From the 1880s until World War II started in 1941, this area was part of Neptune Beach. It was a popular amusement park and resort. People called it "Coney Island of the West." It had swimming areas and houses by the water. During World War II, the site became a training base. It was used to train commanders for the United States Merchant Marine.

How Crown Beach Got Its Name

The park was first called "Alameda Memorial Beach." Later, it was renamed for a local politician named Robert W. Crown. He was an Assemblyman who worked for the community. The building that is now the visitor center was once a medical building for the training base.

Keeping the Beach Sandy and Strong

The beach is about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) long. In 1982, the sand started to wash away. So, a project used a barge to pump sand from the bay back onto the beach. This helped make the beach bigger again. Even with special barriers called groins, the sand still moved. Another big project happened in 2013. This time, they pumped 82,600 cubic yards (63,150 cubic meters) of sand onto the shore. This helped restore the beach and its sand dunes.

Wildlife and Water Quality

The visitor center's current exhibits opened in 2004. The beach is a popular spot for people who love to watch birds. In the fall and winter, you can see many sea birds. These include grebes, ducks, and loons. In 2010, most of the beach had good water quality all year.

New Land for the Park

In 2015, the East Bay Regional Parks District bought 3 acres (1.2 hectares) of land. This land was once a U.S. Department of Agriculture facility. The park district bought it for about $2.18 million. This land, called Neptune Point, was important. It meant the land would be used for public benefit, not for private homes.

Activities at Crown Memorial State Beach

Swimming and Water Sports

You can swim at Crown Memorial State Beach all year during park hours. There is a bathhouse on the west end of the beach. Please note, there are no lifeguards on duty. The park does not have boat launch facilities. However, you can enjoy Windsurfing, kiteboarding, and small boats like kayaks.
