Crown Mountain, also known as Ellison Peak, is a large mountain found in Strathcona Provincial Park. This park is located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The mountain stands tall at 1,846 meters (about 6,056 feet) above sea level. It is a well-known landmark in the area.
History of Crown Mountain
Crown Mountain has an interesting history in British Columbia. It was an important landmark for a huge piece of land given to Robert Dunsmuir. This land grant helped pay for building the E&N Railway. Later, part of this land became a boundary for Strathcona Provincial Park.
First Climb to the Top
In 1910, the Premier of British Columbia, Sir Richard McBride, decided to create a special area for Strathcona Provincial Park. His Minister of Lands, Price Ellison, led a group to explore this new park area. On July 29, 1910, they made the very first recorded climb to the top of Crown Mountain.
The Exploration Team
The team included Price Ellison's 20-year-old daughter, Myra King Ellison. She was the first person to step onto the peak! Other members of the group were Colonel William Holmes, J. Twaddle, A.L. Hudson, Harry McClure Johnson (who was Myra's cousin), Charles Haslam, James Hasworth, and Frank Ward. Their adventure helped map out and understand this important part of British Columbia.
