The Crown flower (scientific name: Calotropis gigantea) is a type of plant. It's also known as Giant Milkweed. This plant belongs to a group called the subfamily Asclepiadoideae. It originally comes from (is native to) parts of southeast Asia. Over time, it has also started growing naturally (become naturalized) in places like Hawai'i.
What is the Crown Flower?
The Crown flower is a large shrub. It can grow up to about 4 meters (13 feet) tall. It has clusters of beautiful, waxy flowers. These flowers can be either white or a lovely lavender color.
Flower Details
Each Crown flower has five pointed petals. In the very center of the flower, there's a small "crown." This crown holds the parts of the flower that produce pollen, called the stamens. The plant also has oval-shaped, light green leaves. If you break a stem, you'll see a milky sap come out. This milky sap contains certain natural substances.
