Cruls Islands: An Antarctic Discovery
Where Are They?
The Cruls Islands are part of the Wilhelm Archipelago. This is a chain of islands found off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost part of mainland Antarctica. It stretches towards South America.
Who Found Them?
These islands were first discovered a long time ago. This happened during the Belgian Antarctic Expedition. This important journey took place between 1897 and 1899. The expedition was led by a brave explorer named Adrien de Gerlache. His team was the first to explore this specific area.
Naming the Islands
After their discovery, the islands needed a name. Adrien de Gerlache decided to name them after Luís Cruls. Luís Cruls was a famous Belgian astronomer. An astronomer is a scientist who studies stars and planets. Cruls later became the Director of the Observatory in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is why the islands are called the Cruls Islands.
