Discovering Crumley Chapel
How Crumley Chapel Got Its Name
This area was first settled a long time ago, in the early 1840s. The community got its name from a local church and a cemetery. Both were named after Robert Crumley, who was an early farmer in the area.
The Crumley Chapel Methodist Church was started in 1859. The Crumley Chapel Cemetery was founded a year earlier, in 1858. It was dedicated to Oliver Shoemaker and his wife. Mr. Shoemaker was the person who generously donated the land for the cemetery.
A Reporter's Story
A famous reporter named Ernie Pyle visited Crumley Chapel in 1939. He was known for traveling around and writing about everyday life. He wrote about a disagreement in the community. Some people wanted to change the town's name to "Westwood."
This idea caused a lot of discussion and strong feelings. Ernie Pyle reported that the debate had been going on for several months. He even jokingly suggested a new name, "Crumwood," as a way to help everyone agree. He knew the people probably wouldn't take his advice, but it showed how much attention the name change was getting.
