Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Crutchfield is a small place in Surry County, North Carolina, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. It sits right next to the Yadkin River.

What is Crutchfield?

Crutchfield is a community where people live, but it doesn't have its own mayor or city council. Instead, it's part of the larger Marsh Township in Surry County. Think of it as a neighborhood that's part of a bigger area.

Where is Crutchfield Located?

This community is found in North Carolina. It's located on the north side of the Yadkin River, just across from a town called Boonville. The river is an important natural feature in the area.

The Railroad Connection

Long ago, Crutchfield was an important stop on a train line called the Southern Railway. Trains would stop there as they traveled through the region. Today, that same railway is used by the Yadkin Valley Railroad. It shows how important railroads were for travel and trade in the past.

How Crutchfield Got Its Name

The community of Crutchfield is named after a man named Charlie Crutchfield. He was a worker who helped build a special kind of bridge called a trestle bridge for the railroad in that area. Sadly, Charlie Crutchfield died during the construction of this bridge. Since he didn't have any family nearby, he was buried on the other side of the river, in Yadkin County. The community was named in his memory.
