The Crypsitricha mesotypa is a special kind of moth. It belongs to the Tineidae family, which includes many small moths. This tiny creature was first described by a scientist named Edward Meyrick in 1888.

This moth is unique because it is endemic to New Zealand. This means you can only find it living naturally in New Zealand and nowhere else in the world!

Meet the Crypsitricha Mesotypa Moth

Have you ever wondered about the amazing insects that share our planet? The Crypsitricha mesotypa moth is one of them. It's a small but interesting part of New Zealand's wildlife.

What Does It Look Like?

The Crypsitricha mesotypa moth is quite small. Its wingspan (the distance from one wingtip to the other) is usually between 10 and 14 millimeters. That's about the length of a fingernail!

Forewings: A Mix of Colors

The front wings, called forewings, have a mix of colors. They are mostly a light brownish-yellow color. You might also see patches of yellowish-white mixed in.

There are some cool patterns on these wings:

  • Two small black spots are near the front edge (costa) close to the body.
  • A blackish line runs along the middle of the wing near the base.
  • A thick, blackish bar stretches from the front edge, going more than halfway across the wing.
  • Right after this black bar, there's a yellowish-white bar.
  • The area between these black markings often looks a bit dark and blurry.
  • The back half of the front edge is dark brownish-black with yellowish-white spots.
  • There's also a small black spot in the middle of the wing, about two-thirds of the way back. This spot sometimes looks like it's split in two by a yellowish-white spot underneath it.

Hindwings: Simple and Pale

The back wings, called hindwings, are much simpler. They are a pale whitish-grey color. These wings help the moth fly quickly through the air.

Where Does It Live?

As we mentioned, the Crypsitricha mesotypa moth is endemic to New Zealand. This means it has evolved to live only in the unique environments found there. New Zealand is famous for its special plants and animals that aren't found anywhere else. This moth is one of those special creatures!
