Cuítiva is a small town and municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Boyacá Department, within the Sugamuxi Province. The town sits high up in the mountains, about 2,750 meters (9,022 feet) above sea level. It is about 85 kilometers (53 miles) from Tunja, the capital city of the Boyacá Department. Cuítiva is surrounded by other towns like Iza to the north, Sogamoso to the east, Aquitania to the west, and Tota to the south.

What Does the Name Cuítiva Mean?
The name Cuítiva comes from an old language called Muysccubun. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people. In their language, Cuítiva means "Similarity to the chief."
The Story of Cuítiva
Ancient Times: The Muisca People
Long ago, before the Spanish arrived, the area where Cuítiva is now was home to the Muisca people. They were organized into a group of communities called the Muisca Confederation. The powerful leader, or iraca, from nearby Sugamuxi also ruled over Cuítiva.
Founding of Modern Cuítiva
The modern town of Cuítiva was officially founded on January 19, 1550. It was established by a person named Juan de San Martín.
Honoring an Ancient God
In the main square of Cuítiva, there is a special monument. It honors Bochica, who was a very important messenger god in the Muisca religion.
What People Do in Cuítiva
The main ways people make a living in Cuítiva are through farming and raising animals.
