How the Magazine Started

Cuadernos started in October 1963. It was created by Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez. He used to be a minister of education. This was during the time of Francisco Franco's government in Spain. The magazine was based in Madrid. It was the first magazine in Spain to focus on current events.

Changing Ideas Over Time

When Cuadernos first began, it had a Christian democratic viewpoint. This means it supported ideas of democracy based on Christian values. But as time went on, the magazine became more focused on democracy. It became less about Christian ideas.

Later, Cuadernos started to support center-left ideas. These are political ideas that are often about fairness and helping people. Even later, it became a socialist publication. Socialism often means supporting more government involvement to help society.

A Voice for Democracy

Many Spanish journalists wrote for Cuadernos. These journalists wanted Spain to have more pluralism. This means they wanted many different ideas and opinions to be shared freely.

A famous historian, Paul Preston, said that Cuadernos was a "champion of democratic ideals." It worked hard to promote democratic ideas. Another magazine called Triunfo also did this.

During the transition to democracy in Spain, Cuadernos was very important. It helped people understand why democratic reforms were needed. Democratic reforms are changes that make a country more democratic.

How Many Copies Were Sold?

In 1968, Cuadernos sold about 30,000 copies each month. The magazine stopped being published at the end of 1978. This happened because of money problems.
