Cucurbita lundelliana is a wild plant that belongs to the same family as pumpkins and squashes. It's a special type of plant called a mesophyte, which means it likes to grow in places with a balanced amount of water, not too wet and not too dry. This plant is originally from parts of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. Unlike many of its relatives, C. lundelliana has never been tamed or grown by people for food.

Discovering Cucurbita Lundelliana

Where It Lives

This wild squash plant mostly grows in the Yucatán area. You can find it close to the sea, often among limestone cliffs. In Guatemala, it grows in a place called Parque Nacional Yaxha Nakum Naranjo. It can be seen along the Rio Ixtinto and near Laguna Julequito, which is west of Lake Yaxha.

What It Looks Like

Cucurbita lundelliana has pretty yellow-orange flowers. Its seeds are a gray-green color. The leaves of this plant look a bit like those of another squash plant called Cucurbita ficifolia. This plant is also quite strong! It can fight off common plant diseases like powdery mildew and crown rot.

Why It's Important to Science

Scientists are very interested in C. lundelliana. In 1962, a scientist named Whitaker made an important discovery. He successfully crossed a wild Cucurbita plant with a domesticated one for the first time. He used C. lundelliana and crossed it with Cucurbita moschata, which is a type of squash we eat.

Finding Plant Ancestors

The main goal of this study was to find out which wild plants were the ancestors of the squashes we grow today. Scientists wanted to learn how our food plants came to be. It turned out that C. lundelliana often passed on its traits strongly in these crosses. This wild plant can cross quite well with all five types of Cucurbita that people grow for food. This makes it very useful for understanding plant history and possibly improving our current crops.

How It Was Discovered

The plant species was officially named and described in 1943. This was done by a famous botanist named Liberty Hyde Bailey. He wrote about it in a scientific publication called Gentes Herbarum.
