Cuhtahlatah facts for kids
Cuhtahlatah was a brave Cherokee woman who lived a long time ago, during the American Revolutionary War. Her name, Gatûñ'lätï in the Cherokee language, means "wild hemp". She is remembered for her amazing courage in battle.
Cuhtahlatah's Heroic Act
During a battle, Cuhtahlatah's husband was sadly killed. Instead of retreating, she quickly grabbed his tomahawk, which is a type of axe. She then bravely charged at the enemy, shouting "Kill! Kill!" Her actions were incredibly inspiring.
Turning the Tide of Battle
At that moment, her people, the Cherokee warriors, were starting to fall back. But when they saw Cuhtahlatah's fearless charge, their spirits were lifted. They rallied together and fought with renewed strength. Because of her bravery, they were able to win the battle!
Remembering Her Story
Cuhtahlatah's incredible story of courage and leadership is an important part of Cherokee history. Her actions showed great strength and determination. Her story was written down in a special book called the Wahnenauhi manuscript in 1889, so people would always remember her.
