Culburra Beach, often called Culburra, is a fun town on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It's part of the Shoalhaven area. The town is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) east-southeast of Nowra. It sits on Jerrinja Wandi Wandian Aboriginal Country.

In 2016, about 2,874 people lived here. Culburra Beach is a main spot for nearby coastal towns. These include Currarong, Callala Beach, Callala Bay, and Orient Point.

What's Culburra Beach Like?

Culburra Beach is a small town by the sea. It's a popular place for holidays, fishing, and surfing. Local jobs include farming oysters, fishing, and catching prawns.

The town has two great surf beaches: Culburra Beach and Warrain Beach. The Crookhaven River is to the north. Curleys Bay is to the west, and Lake Wollumboola is to the south.

Culburra Beach is home to several sports teams. These include the Culburra Beach Boardriders and the Culburra Dolphins Rugby League team. There's also the Culburra Cougars soccer team.

The Burradise Festival

Beaches and Surfing

Culburra Beach has the closest surf beaches to Nowra. It's home to the Culburra Beach and Nowra Surf Lifesaving Club. Their building is at the north end of Warrain Beach.

Lifeguards patrol the beaches during summer holidays. The beaches are on different sides of Penguin Head. This means they offer different surf conditions. They are great for surfers, swimmers, and families. You can catch many types of fish from these beaches. You can also fish from the rocky areas nearby.

The Story of Culburra Beach

The town was first called Wheelers Point. This was after George Wheeler, who owned the first land here. In 1916, the name changed to Culburra. This is an Aboriginal word meaning "sand." Later, it became Culburra Beach.

Mail services started at Warrain Beach Post Office. This office was renamed Culburra Beach in 1970.

Schools in the Area

The first school in the area was Roseby Park Aboriginal School. It opened in 1903. It became a public school in 1906 and closed in 1964. Children then went to Pyree Public School. That school closed in August 1976. The next month, Culburra Public School opened.

Town Planning and Famous Photos

Many people thought Walter Burley Griffin designed Culburra Beach's streets. He also designed Canberra. But it was actually developer Henry Halloran who planned the town. He was the landowner, designer, and surveyor.

Culburra Beach is also where the famous photo Sunbaker was taken. Max Dupain took this picture in 1937. The man in the photo was Harold Salvage. He was a British builder on a surfing trip with friends. The most well-known version of the photo was printed much later, in 1975.
