St Vincent County was a historical area in New South Wales, Australia. It was one of the first 19 counties created there. Today, it's known as a "cadastral division," which is like a special land area used for mapping and property records. This county covered a big part of the south coast, including places like Batemans Bay, Ulladulla, and Jervis Bay. It also stretched inland to Braidwood. The Shoalhaven River formed its northern and western borders, and the Deua River was its southern border.
This county was named after a famous British naval officer, John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent. He was an Admiral, which is a very high rank in the navy. Later, between 1856 and 1859, the area of St Vincent County had its own special areas for voting, called electoral districts. These were the first times people in this region could vote for their representatives.
Back in 1852, St Vincent County was quite large, covering about 4,300 square kilometers (or 1.7 million acres). At that time, about 2,572 people lived there.
What Are Cadastral Divisions?
A cadastral division is a way of dividing land for official purposes. Think of it like drawing lines on a map to keep track of who owns what. These divisions help with land ownership, taxes, and planning for towns and cities. In New South Wales, counties like St Vincent are part of this system.
Jervis Bay Territory
A small part of what used to be St Vincent County is now the Jervis Bay Territory. This area was given to the Australian government in 1915. It was important because it gave the capital city, Canberra, access to the sea. The land transferred included parts of the parishes of Bherwerre, Beecroft, Farnham, and Nowra.
Exploring the Parishes of St Vincent County
Counties are often divided into smaller areas called parishes. These are also used for land administration. Many towns and natural features within St Vincent County are located within these parishes. For example, the well-known coastal town of Batemans Bay is found in the Bateman Parish.
