Cumberland County was an important area in the early days of the Vermont Republic. It was a "county," which is like a large region within a state or country. It helped organize the land and people.

What Was Cumberland County?

Cumberland County was a special part of the Vermont Republic. This republic was a country that existed for a short time. It was located in what is now the state of Vermont. Before it was called Cumberland County, it was known as Unity County. This name change happened on March 21, 1778.

How It Started

Cumberland County was officially created on March 17, 1778. It was formed from land that used to be part of New York. Specifically, it took over parts of two counties from New York: Cumberland County and Gloucester County. This happened when Vermont gained control of these areas.

How It Ended

Cumberland County did not last very long. It existed for only about three years. In 1781, the county was divided into smaller pieces. These new pieces became three different counties. They were Orange County, Windham County, and Windsor County. These new counties still exist in Vermont today.
