How Cushman Got Its Name
Cushman started as a train station. It was part of the Southern Pacific Railroad's Coos Bay line. The station was named after C. C. and I. B. Cushman, who were local residents.
The Original Acme
There was another community nearby called Acme. But the railroad already had a station named Acme somewhere else. So, they decided to call this new station "Cushman" instead.
Post Office History
In 1916, the post office from Acme moved to Cushman. It also changed its name to match the station. This post office served the community until it closed in 1961.
Historic Landmarks and Economy
Cushman has some interesting historical features.
The Old Store
There is a historic store in Cushman. It was first built in 1889 and then made bigger in 1925. This store is a reminder of the community's past.
The Swing Bridge
A special swing span railroad bridge crosses the river in Cushman. This bridge could swing open to let big boats, called barges, pass through. These barges used to go to a sawmill in Mapleton, which is now closed.
Past Population and Port
In 1940, about 145 people lived in Cushman. It also had a busy port where ships could load and unload goods.
The Port Orford-Cedar
The hills around Cushman were famous for a special tree called Port Orford-cedar. This is a large evergreen tree that grows naturally in the area. However, by 1990, most of these trees had been harvested. Because of this, the port no longer served large ocean-going vessels.
