Custio Clayton was born on October 5, 1987. He is a professional boxer from Canada. Since 2019, he has held the WBA-NABA welterweight title.
Custio started boxing when he was just 9 years old. His uncle, Gary Johnson, helped him learn the sport. As an amateur boxer, Custio won the Canadian national championship six times! He also represented Canada at two Commonwealth Games and the 2012 Olympics. At the Olympics, he made it to the quarter-finals.
Custio's Amateur Boxing Journey
Custio Clayton began training at his great-uncle's gym in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It was called the City of Lakes Boxing Club. He had his first amateur fight when he was 11. When he was 17, he took a break from boxing for two years to finish high school.
Custio was one of only two Canadian male boxers to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. He was 24 years old at the time. At the Olympic qualification tournament, he reached the quarter-finals. He earned his spot because the boxer who beat him went on to win the whole tournament.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Custio made history. He was the first Canadian to win a boxing match in eight years! He beat Óscar Molina in his first fight. Then, he won against Cameron Hammond from Australia. Custio's Olympic journey ended when he lost to Fred Evans in the quarter-finals.
Custio's Professional Boxing Career
Custio Clayton became a professional boxer in November 2014. He signed a contract with a boxing group called Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM). His very first professional fight was on December 19, 2014. It took place in Quebec City. He fought in the light middleweight division.
On January 28, 2020, Custio had an exciting fight. He knocked out Diego Ramirez in the eighth round. This win helped him keep his WBA title.
Later that year, on October 24, 2020, Custio fought against Sergey Lipinets. Lipinets was a former world champion. They were fighting for the IBF world title. The match ended in a draw, meaning neither boxer won.
On May 14, 2022, Custio had his first professional loss. He fought against Jaron Ennis in an important "eliminator" fight.
