Cyanea kolekoleensis is a very rare flowering plant. It belongs to the bellflower family. People also call it `Oha or Kolekole cyanea. In the Hawaiian language, it's known as haha. This plant is special because it grows only on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. It has only been found in the Wahiawa Mountains.

What is Cyanea kolekoleensis?

This unique plant is a type of Hawaiian lobelioid. It was first discovered in 1987. Scientists last saw it in 1992. Even though it hasn't been seen recently, experts don't think it's extinct. They believe more plants might be hidden in the thick rainforest areas that haven't been explored yet.

Why is this Plant Important?

In 2010, the United States government officially listed Cyanea kolekoleensis as an endangered species. This means it is at high risk of disappearing forever. Protecting endangered species helps keep our planet's natural balance. It also saves unique plants and animals for future generations.

What Does the Plant Look Like?

Cyanea kolekoleensis is a shrub. It can grow up to 1.9 meters (about 6 feet) tall. Its flowers are a beautiful purple-tinged white color.

What Threats Does it Face?

This rare plant faces big challenges in its home. Its habitat is being damaged by feral pigs. These pigs can dig up plants and destroy the soil. Also, new plants brought to Hawaii from other places are a problem. These "exotic plants" can grow fast and take over the space and resources that native plants like Cyanea kolekoleensis need to survive.
