Cygnet (/sɪɡnət/) sig-nət is a friendly town in the Huon Valley in Tasmania, located south of Huonville. It's a place known for its beautiful natural surroundings and a lively community spirit.

History of Cygnet

The bay where Cygnet is located was first named by the Indigenous people who lived in this part of Tasmania. Later, in 1793, a French explorer named Bruni D'Entrecasteaux called it Port des Cygnes, which means "Port of Swans". He chose this name because he saw many black swans in the area.

The first European person to settle in the district was William Nichols in 1834. He received a large piece of land in 1829. After clearing the land and building a home, Nichols moved his family there. At that time, the only way to reach the property was by a walking path or by boat.

William Nichols' grandson, John Wilson, later started a business building ships in what was then called Port Cygnet. For many years, until the late 1850s, selling timber was the main way people made money as they cleared the land. Timber was sent from the area to be used for firewood, building houses, and making fences.

In 1840, the town of Port Cygnet was officially planned. Land was offered for sale to the public in 1848. The Post Office opened on January 1, 1854. The town was known as Port Cygnet until 1895, then Lovett until 1915, and finally, it became Cygnet.
