The Huon Valley Council is a local government group in Tasmania, Australia. It looks after most of the southern part of the state. The Huon Valley is mostly a rural area, meaning it has lots of countryside and farms. About 17,219 people live here. Some of the main towns and places in the region include Cygnet, Dover, Franklin, Geeveston, Southport, and the biggest town, Huonville.

History of the Huon Valley Council

The Huon Valley Council was formed in 1993. Before that, there were three separate local councils: Esperance, Huon, and Port Cygnet. They all joined together to create the single Huon Valley Council we know today.

Macquarie Island's Connection

A very special and remote place called Macquarie Island is also part of the Huon Valley Council. This island is about 1,400 kilometres southeast of Tasmania. It used to be part of the Esperance council, and when the councils joined, it became part of the Huon Valley.

Understanding the Huon Valley Community

The Huon Valley is known for its rural and agricultural lifestyle. This means farming is a big part of the area's economy and way of life. It's also a very large area in terms of size.

Population Growth in Local Towns

Over the years, some towns in the Huon Valley have grown quite a bit. Between 2001 and 2011, towns like Huonville and Franklin saw a lot more people move in. Cygnet also had a good increase in its population.

How the Council Works

The Council is made up of elected members called councillors. These councillors are chosen by the people who live in the Huon Valley. Their job is to make decisions that help the community and manage local services.

Changes in Council Leadership (2016)

In 2016, there were some big changes for the Huon Valley Council. The state government decided to remove all the councillors from their positions. This happened because there had been a long period of problems and disagreements within the council.

A New Start for the Council

After the councillors were removed, a special person called a Commissioner was put in charge. This Commissioner, Adriana Taylor, helped to manage the area until new elections could be held. New elections took place in late 2018, allowing the community to choose new leaders for the Council.
