Surveyors Bay is located about 43 kilometers (about 27 miles) south of a town called Huonville. In 2016, a count of people living there, called a census, showed that only 47 people lived in Surveyors Bay.

The area now known as Surveyors Bay had a different name in the past. It was once called Camden. However, by the year 1899, the name was changed to Surveyors Bay. It officially became a recognized locality in 1971.

Surveyors Bay is right next to the water. The Huon River estuary, which is where the river meets the sea, forms the edges of the area from the north-east to the south-east. This means the bay is a part of the larger Huon River system.
