Who Was Saint Cyngar?

Saint Cyngar was born around the year 488 AD. His father was King Gerren Llyngesog of Dumnonia, a kingdom in what is now southwest England. When Cyngar grew up, he decided to follow a religious path.

He became a close helper of his nephew, Saint Cybi Felyn. Together, they traveled to many places, spreading their faith and building churches.

Early Journeys and Churches

Cyngar and Saint Cybi first went to a place called Edeligion in South Wales. There, they built churches in areas like Llangybi-upon-Usk. However, a local ruler, King Glywys, made them leave.

After leaving Wales, they traveled to Ireland. They spent four years on an island called Aran Mor, where they continued to build churches. Later, they moved back to Wales, settling for a time on the Llŷn Peninsula near Cricieth.

Founding the Holyhead Monastery

Eventually, Saint Cyngar and Saint Cybi found their way to Anglesey. They established a very important monastery in Holyhead. This monastery became a center for their religious work.

From Holyhead, Saint Cyngar went on to found the church in Llangefni. This shows his dedication to spreading Christianity throughout the region.

Where Else Is Cyngar Remembered?

There is a place called Ynys Cyngar, which means "Cyngar's Island." It used to be an island but is now a piece of land sticking out into the sea. It's located near Borth y Gest, close to the mouth of the Afon Glaslyn river.

A Church in Wales church in this area is also named after Saint Cyngar. This shows how important he was to the local community.

His Passing

Saint Cyngar passed away on November 7th. The exact year is not known, but it was likely around 550 AD. He was buried in Llangefni, the town where he founded a church.
