Professor Cynthia Pine is a British expert in dentistry. She was born in October 1953. She teaches at the London School of Dentistry. In 2003, she made history by becoming the first woman to lead a dentistry school in the United Kingdom.

Cynthia Pine is part of a group of very successful people from Guyana who live in Britain. This group includes well-known figures like Waheed Alli, Raj Persaud, Herman Ouseley, David Dabydeen, Keith Waithe, and Rudolph Dunbar.

Life and Career

Cynthia Pine was born in 1953 in Guyana, a country in South America. She studied at the University of Manchester. In 1976, she earned her degree in dental surgery. She continued her studies and received a PhD from the same university in 1982. Later, she also earned an MBA degree from the University of Dundee.

In 2003, she became the Dean of the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry. A Dean is like a head teacher for a specific part of a university. She was the first woman in the UK to hold such a position in dentistry. Later, she became the Pro Vice Chancellor, International, at Salford University. This is another important leadership role, focusing on international connections for the university.

In 2006, Professor Pine received a special award called the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). This award is given by the British monarch to people who have made important contributions to their field. She has also been named one of the UK's 100 most influential people of African and Afro-Caribbean descent on the Powerlist.

Since 2013, Professor Pine has been a professor of Dental Public Health. This means she studies how to improve dental health for whole communities. She works at the Institute of Dentistry, which is part of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Since 2014, she has also led the Unit of Dental Public Health there.

In 2018, she received the EW Borrow Memorial Award. This award recognized her important research. Her work helps prevent dental problems in children. In 2020, a portrait of Professor Pine was shown in an exhibition. The exhibition was called Phenomenal Women: Portraits of UK Black Female Professors.

Early Life and Family

Cynthia Pine's father was from British Guiana (now Guyana). In 1941, he was studying in the U.S. He came to Britain as a G.I. (an American soldier) during the Second World War. While in Britain, he met Cynthia's mother. They got married after the war.

During this time, it was not easy for people from different backgrounds to marry. Cynthia's father faced unfair treatment because of his race. It was hard for him to find work and a place for his family to live. Eventually, they settled in Birmingham. Cynthia was the only Black child at her school. She also experienced racism there.
