Herman George Ouseley (born March 24, 1945 – died October 2, 2024) was a very important person in British politics. He was known for working to make things fair for everyone. Before he joined the House of Lords, he worked in local government. He also advised public services on how to be fair and include all kinds of people.

Lord Ouseley was a leader in fighting against unfair treatment (racism) in big organizations. He also spoke up for people who came from difficult backgrounds. He was a member of the House of Lords from 2001 to 2019. He was also named one of the "100 Great Black Britons" in 2003.

Herman Ouseley's Early Life

Herman Ouseley was born in Guyana in 1945. He moved to England when he was 11 years old, in 1957. He went to William Penn School. Later, he studied at Catford College. There, he earned a diploma in how to manage local government.

Herman Ouseley's Career in Public Service

Herman Ouseley worked for local governments from 1963 to 1993. He became the first main advisor on race relations in local government. From 1981, he led the Ethnic Minority Unit for the Greater London Council.

Later, he became the chief executive of the London Borough of Lambeth. He also led the former Inner London Education Authority. This was a huge job, as he was in charge of over 1,000 schools and colleges in London. He was the first Black person to hold such a high position. From 1993 to 2000, Ouseley was the head of the Commission for Racial Equality. This group worked to stop unfair treatment based on race.

After 2000, he worked as a consultant. He helped organizations improve their performance. He also helped them achieve better fairness and inclusion for all people.

Fighting Racism in Sports

In 1993, Herman Ouseley started a project to fight racism in football. He became the chairperson of Kick It Out. This is a famous campaign that works to make football free from discrimination. It also helps make the sport welcoming for people from all backgrounds. Lord Ouseley did not get paid for his work with Kick It Out.

Other Activities and Interests

From 1997, Ouseley led the Chandran Foundation. This charity helps young people who have learning difficulties. He was also a member of the Institute of Race Relations. This group studies and challenges unfairness and inequality.

Lord Ouseley was also on the board of directors for the Manchester United Foundation. He was a big fan of Manchester United his whole life. He also supported his local team, Millwall. He also cheered for Dulwich Hamlet, one of the local teams he played for when he was younger.

Later Life and Passing

Herman Ouseley passed away on October 2, 2024. He was 79 years old. He died after a short illness.

Awards and Recognition

Herman Ouseley was made a Knight Bachelor in 1997. This was for his great work in community relations and local government. In 2001, he became a life peer. This means he became a member of the House of Lords for life. His title was Baron Ouseley, from Peckham Rye in London.

Lord Ouseley received 13 honorary degrees from different universities. These included the Universities of Edinburgh, Sheffield Hallam, Bradford, and Leicester.
