Cáñar is a charming small village located in the beautiful Alpujarras region of Granada, Spain. It sits just a few kilometers north of the main road that connects Órgiva to Pampaneira. A famous long-distance walking trail, the GR 7, even passes right through the village!

About Cáñar

Cáñar covers an area of 26 square kilometers. It is located high up in the mountains, about 1014 meters (3,327 feet) above sea level. In 2005, around 366 people lived there. Most of them were Spanish citizens.

Life in the Village

Cáñar is a very traditional village in the Alpujarras style. You'll see animal stables built right into the houses. These houses often open onto the main street and village square. The people who live in Cáñar are known for being very friendly and welcoming. They love to celebrate all the big festivals with lots of energy!

The village doesn't have many places for tourists. There are a few bars where you can grab a drink or a snack. If you want to stay overnight, there are small apartments to rent. You can also find country houses, called cortijos, higher up in the mountains. There's even a small, fancy hotel just 2 kilometers outside the village.

Village Festivals

The main celebration in Cáñar is for its patron saint, Santa Ana. A patron saint is like a special protector for the village. The festival, called a fiesta, happens around July 26th each year. It's a time for everyone to come together and have fun!

The Big Dam

Between Cáñar and the next village to the east, Soportújar, there's a very interesting dam. It crosses a deep valley called the Chico river gorge. This dam is known as "Dique 24." It was built in 1942. Its main job is to control the powerful flash floods that sometimes rush down the Rio Chico river. The GR7 footpath, which runs through Cáñar, crosses the stream just above this dam.
