How D'Angelo Started
In March 1967, two friends, Brian J. McLaughlin and Jay Howland, opened their first sandwich shop. It was in Dedham, Massachusetts. They were just 21 years old!
From Ma Riva's to D'Angelo
Their first shop was called "Ma Riva's Sub Shop." Later, they changed the name to "Angelo Sub Shop." Around 1978, they added the letter "D" to the name. People say the "D" stands for "delicious." This change also helped avoid confusion with other stores called Angelo supermarkets.
D'Angelo sold many tasty items. They had salads, Syrian pocket bread, and sub sandwiches. Their most popular sandwich was the delicious steak and cheese sub.
Making Their Own Food
D'Angelo wanted to make sure their food was always fresh. So, they owned their own bakery called Liberty Bakery. This bakery made and delivered all the bread to every D'Angelo store.
They also had a distribution center called Progressive Foods. This center delivered all the food ingredients to the stores every week. Later, they even added a special meat processing plant. This plant shaved 50,000 pounds of steak each week for their popular sandwiches!
Changes Over the Years
In the mid-1980s, D'Angelo stores started to change. Many locations added full-service Steve's Ice Cream counters. Later, this ice cream was changed to Chip's ice cream.
Big Company Buys D'Angelo
In 1993, a very large company called PepsiCo bought D'Angelo. PepsiCo also owned famous brands like Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. They hoped to make D'Angelo a national chain, but this plan did not happen. At that time, D'Angelo had 173 locations.
After PepsiCo bought D'Angelo, they removed the Chip's ice cream. Some D'Angelo restaurants then added a full-service Pizza Hut section. Other locations even added a Honey Dew Donuts section.
New Owners and Growth
In August 1997, another company bought D'Angelo. This was Papa Gino's Holdings Corporation. D'Angelo had 203 locations by then.
In November 2018, many D'Angelo locations suddenly closed. This happened because the parent company faced financial challenges. But in February 2019, the company was sold again. It is now part of a group called New England Authentic Eats, LLC.
In January 2020, Tom Sterrett became the new CEO. He leads New England Authentic Eats, which owns both D'Angelo and Papa Gino's. In November 2021, D'Angelo announced exciting news. They plan to open new stores again for the first time in a while!
