The Délı̨nę First Nation is a group of Dene people who live in the Northwest Territories in Canada. Their main community is called Délı̨nę, which is the only town located on the shores of Great Bear Lake. Even though a new government called the Délı̨nę Got'ı̨nę Government took over many of their duties in 2016, the Canadian government still officially recognizes the Délı̨nę First Nation for some things, like who belongs to their community.

Governing Themselves

The Délı̨nę First Nation is part of a larger group called the Sahtu Dene Council. They work together on important decisions.

Through an agreement called the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement, the Délı̨nę First Nation shares ownership of a huge area of land. This land covers about 41,437 square kilometers in the Sahtu Region.

In 2014, the Délı̨nę First Nation also signed a special agreement for self-government. This agreement led to the creation of the Délı̨nę Got'ı̨nę Government. This new government started working on September 1, 2016.

The Délı̨nę Got'ı̨nę Government took over all the jobs and duties that were previously handled by the Délı̨nę First Nation. It also took over the Délı̨nę Land Corporation and the local town government. This means that the First Nation and the town government joined together. This kind of merger is very special and unique in the Northwest Territories.

Protecting Special Places

The Délı̨nę First Nation also works with Parks Canada to look after a very important place. This place is called Saoyú-ʔehdacho. It is Canada's largest National Historic Site. Together, they make sure this special area is protected and cared for.
