Treaty 11 facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Treaty 11 was a very important agreement. It was the last of the Numbered Treaties made in Canada. This agreement happened between 1921 and 1922. It was signed by King George V and many First Nation groups. These groups lived in what we now call the Northwest Territories.

Who Signed Treaty 11?

A person named Henry Anthony Conroy was chosen to be the treaty commissioner. His job was to talk with the First Nations and get the agreements signed. He worked on this in 1921. But he could not get all the groups in the Liard area to sign that summer.

Sadly, Mr. Conroy passed away in April 1922. So, a new person took over. His name was Thomas William Harris. He was an Indian Agent in Fort Simpson. Mr. Harris finished the treaty signings in Liard in July 1922. Bishop Gabriel-Joseph-Elie Breynat also signed the treaty.

Where Are the Treaty Boundaries?

The exact border between Treaty 8 and Treaty 11 can be a bit confusing. The Yellowknives Dene First Nation signed Treaty 8. However, if you read the words of the treaties, their land is actually inside the area of Treaty 11. This land is known as Chief Drygeese Territory.
