Who Are the Tłı̨chǫ People?
The Tłı̨chǫ are an Indigenous group in Canada. They are also known as the Dogrib people. They have lived in the Northwest Territories for a very long time. Their culture and traditions are very important to them.
Their Traditional Lands
The Tłı̨chǫ people have a deep connection to their land. In 2005, the Dog Rib Rae First Nation became part of the Tłı̨chǫ Government. This government now manages a large area of Tłı̨chǫ land. This land covers about 39,000 square kilometers. That's a huge area, almost the size of Switzerland!
How They Are Governed
The Dog Rib Rae First Nation used to be governed mainly by a "band government." This is a type of local government for First Nations.
The Tłı̨chǫ Government
In 2005, a big change happened. The Dog Rib Rae First Nation joined with other Tłı̨chǫ communities to form the Tłı̨chǫ Government. This new government now handles many of the daily tasks and decisions for the community. For example, the Behchokǫ̀ Community Government, which is part of the Tłı̨chǫ Government, now manages many local services.
Staying Connected to Canada
Even with the new Tłı̨chǫ Government, the Canadian federal government still recognizes the Dog Rib Rae First Nation. This is for official membership purposes under a law called the Indian Act. This act helps keep track of who is a registered member of a First Nation in Canada.
