The Düben family (German pronunciation: [ˈdyːbm̩]) is a Swedish family. They originally came from Saxony, which is now part of Germany. Members of this family became part of the Swedish nobility.
The family became well-known because of Andreas Düben (around 1597–1662). He was an organist at the German Church in Stockholm, Swedish Empire.
During the 1600s, the Düben family had a big impact on music. They were very important at the Royal Court Orchestra. This time was like a "golden age" for music there. The family collected and wrote many musical pieces. These were put together into a collection called the Düben collection. Gustaf Düben, Andreas Düben's son, helped create this collection.
Some family members use the surname "von Düben" (German pronunciation: [fɔnˈdyːbm̩]). This "von" part shows they are part of the nobility. Other family members do not use "von" in their names.

The Düben Family Story
The first known member of the Düben family was Michael Düben. He was an advisor in a town called Lützen. His son, Andreas Düben (1558–1625), became an organist. He played the organ at the famous St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.
Andreas Düben's son, also named Andreas Düben, moved to Sweden in 1620. In 1625, he started working as an organist at the German Church in Stockholm.
Famous Family Members
Not all important Düben family members were musicians. Some held high positions in society.
- Emerentia von Düben was a lady-in-waiting to Ulrika Eleonora, Queen of Sweden. She was a favorite of the Queen.
- Her nephew, Henrik Jakob von Düben, was Sweden's special representative to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
- Henrik Jakob's son, Anders Gustaf von Düben, had to leave Sweden in 1833. He had traveled with Gustav, Prince of Vasa.
- A. G. von Düben's grandson, Edward Wilhelm von Düben, was Sweden's vice-consul in Salina Cruz, Mexico. He is the ancestor of all living male descendants of the family.
Music and the Düben Collection
Gustaf Düben was an organist and composer. He added the most to the Düben collection. This collection of musical writings is kept safe at the Uppsala University Library today. It even has pieces by the famous composer Dieterich Buxtehude.
Noble Titles
The Düben family was given noble titles four times in Sweden. This happened at the House of Nobility.
- In 1719, some family members became Barons (No. 135 & 139).
- In 1726, another part of the family received a noble title without a specific rank (No. 1785).
- Also in 1719, another branch of the Düben family (No. 80) became Barons.
- Then, in 1743, they were given the rank of Count.
