DTV was a cool series of music videos made by the Walt Disney Company. It started on May 5, 1984. The idea was to take popular songs and mix them with classic Disney cartoon clips. This was inspired by the music videos shown on the cable channel MTV, which is why it was called DTV.
Most of the songs were popular hits from the time. But some older songs, like "The Purple People Eater" from the 1950s, were also used. These videos were shown on Disney Channel to fill time, because the channel didn't have commercials back then. DTV also became the main focus of special TV shows. You could also buy collections of DTV videos on tapes and discs like VHS. After the first DTV series, a second one called DTV² was made in 1989. DTV stopped being shown in the early 2000s.
DTV on Home Video
Many of the DTV songs were released on VHS tapes. There were five different collections. The first three were called "Pop & Rock," "Rock, Rhythm & Blues," and "Golden Oldies." These came out in late 1984 from Walt Disney Home Video. After that, two more videos were released in the summer of 1985. These were named "Love Songs" and "Groovin' For a '60s Afternoon."
DTV Television Specials
Disney also aired three special DTV shows on NBC in 1986 and 1987. Each special had a different theme of music:
- DTV Valentine aired on February 14, 1986. It focused on songs about love and romance.
- DTV Doggone Valentine aired on February 13, 1987. This special also featured love songs, but it was a special tribute to Disney's dog and cat characters.
- DTV Monster Hits aired on October 30, 1987. This one was all about Halloween-themed music and spooky cartoon clips.
- DTV Christmas focused on holiday and Christmas music.
