Daði Freyr Pétursson (born 30 June 1992) is an Icelandic musician. He is known professionally as Daði Freyr or simply Daði. He lives in Berlin, Germany.

Daði is famous as the leader of the band Daði & Gagnamagnið. They were supposed to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with their song "Think About Things". However, the event was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, they represented Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "10 Years". They finished in fourth place, which was a great achievement!

Early Life and Education

Daði was born in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. He lived in Denmark until he was nine years old. Then, his family moved back to Iceland. They settled in the Southern Region.

Daði finished high school in 2012. Later, in 2017, he earned a degree in Music Management and Audio Production in Berlin.

Music Career Highlights

When he was young, Daði played the drums. He also learned to play the piano and bass guitar. He started a band called RetRoBot with his friend Kristján Pálmi. Other friends later joined the band.

In 2012, RetRoBot won a music competition called Músíktilraunir. Daði was even named the best electronic musician that year! RetRoBot released their first album, Blackout, a year later.

First Try: 2017 In 2017, Daði tried to represent Iceland in Eurovision. He entered Söngvakeppnin, which is Iceland's national selection show. His song was "Is This Love?". He performed with a group called Gagnamagnið. This group included his sister, his wife, and some friends.

Gagnamagnið became well-known for their special style. They wore bright teal green sweaters with pixel art pictures of themselves. They also used funny "instruments" made from everyday items. Daði came in second place in the competition that year.

Going Viral: 2020–2021 Daði tried again in 2020 with the song "Think About Things". This song was inspired by his newborn daughter. The music video for the song became very popular online. Even actor Russell Crowe shared it!

Daði & Gagnamagnið won Söngvakeppnin 2020. They were chosen to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. Sadly, the contest was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Daði & Gagnamagnið still won many online fan competitions held by other countries!

In 2021, Daði & Gagnamagnið got another chance. They represented Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "10 Years". This song was about Daði's long relationship with his wife, Árný. During the contest, a group member tested positive for COVID-19. So, they had to use a recorded performance. Despite this, they finished in an amazing fourth place!

After Eurovision

After their Eurovision success, Daði toured around Europe and the United States. He also worked with other musicians. He released his second album, I Made an Album, in 2023.

In 2023, Daði performed a special song at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool. He sang "Whole Again" with many look-alikes and his wife. He also performed at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago in 2024.

Personal Life

Daði is married to Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir, who is also a musician and part of Gagnamagnið. They have two daughters. Their first daughter, Áróra Björg, was born in 2019. She was the inspiration for the song "Think About Things". Their second daughter, Kría Sif, was born in 2021.

Daði is very tall, about 2.08 meters (6 feet 10 inches). He also has his own app called "Neon Planets". His father was a bongo player and performed in the Söngvakeppni competition in 1993.
