Early Life and Education
Daði was born in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. When he was young, his family moved to Denmark. They returned to Iceland when he was nine years old.
He graduated from college in Iceland in 2012. After that, he moved to Berlin, Germany, in 2014. In Berlin, he studied music management and audio production, earning a degree in 2017.
Music Career
Daði has been interested in music since he was a kid. He learned to play the drums, piano, and bass guitar. He started a band called RetRoBot with his friends. In 2012, their band won a big music competition in Iceland called Músíktilraunir ("Music Experiments"). That same year, Daði was named the best electronic musician.
Söngvakeppnin and Eurovision
First Try in 2017
In 2017, Daði competed in Söngvakeppnin, the contest to decide who represents Iceland at Eurovision. He performed the song "Is This Love?".
On stage, he was joined by a group called Gagnamagnið. The group included his sister Sigrún, his wife Árný, and his friends Hulda, Stefán, and Jóhann. They became famous for their matching teal green sweaters with pixel art pictures of their faces on them. They also used fun, fake instruments on stage. Daði finished in second place that year.
Success in 2020 and 2021
Daði and Gagnamagnið returned to Söngvakeppnin in 2020. This time, their song was "Think About Things". Daði wrote the song about his baby daughter. The song and its fun music video became a huge hit online, and even the actor Russell Crowe shared it.
They won the competition and were supposed to go to the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. But, the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though the main contest didn't happen, many countries held their own online contests, and Daði & Gagnamagnið won six of them.
It was announced that the group would get to represent Iceland the next year. At the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, they performed a new song called "10 Years". The song was about Daði's ten-year relationship with his wife, Árný.
During the contest, a member of the group tested positive for COVID-19. This meant they couldn't perform live in the semi-final or the final. Instead, a recording of their rehearsal was shown. They still did amazingly well, finishing in fourth place with 378 points.
After Eurovision
After his success at Eurovision, Daði went on tour across Europe and the United States. He has worked with other musicians, including Montaigne from Australia and the German band Tokio Hotel.
In 2023, he released his second album, I Made an Album. He also performed during the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool.
Personal Life
Daði is married to Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir, who is also a musician and a member of Gagnamagnið. They have two daughters. Their first daughter, Áróra, was born in 2019 and inspired the song "Think About Things". Their second daughter, Kría, was born in 2021.
Daði is very tall, at 2.08 meters (6 feet 10 inches). His father was also a musician and competed in Iceland's Eurovision selection show back in 1993.
