Daʼnaxdaʼxw Nation facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Da'naxda'xw Nation, also known as the Da'naxda'xw/Awaetlatla Nation, is a First Nation government located in British Columbia, Canada. Their traditional territory is on the northern part of Vancouver Island. The main community for the Da'naxda'xw Nation is Alert Bay, which is found in the Queen Charlotte Strait region.

There are about 225 members in the Da'naxda'xw Nation. They are an important part of the Kwakiutl District Council. For discussions about treaties, they are part of the Winalagalis Treaty Group. This group also includes three other First Nations: the Quatsino First Nation, the Gwa'Sala-Nakwaxda'xw Nation, and the Tlatlasikwala Nation.

Who Are the Da'naxda'xw People?

The Da'naxda'xw Aweatlata Nation was once known by a different name: the Tanakteuk First Nation. The name "Tanakteuk" is just another way to spell "Da'naxda'xw" in English. This shows how their name has been written in different ways over time.

Understanding Treaties and Agreements

As of January 2019, the Da'naxda'xw Nation did not have a formal treaty with the Government of Canada or the government of British Columbia. However, they have been working hard on these agreements.

Steps Towards a Treaty

The Nation is currently in stage 4 of 6 in their negotiations with the government of British Columbia. This means they are discussing important principles for a future treaty. A treaty is a formal agreement between First Nations and the government. It helps define rights, land use, and how they will work together.

Past Agreements

Even without a full treaty, the Da'naxda'xw Nation has made other agreements with the government of British Columbia. These include agreements about forestry, which involves managing forests and trees. They have also reached reconciliation agreements. Reconciliation means working to build better relationships and address past issues.
