The Story of Daddies Sauce
How Daddies Sauce Began
Daddies brown sauce first came out in 1904. Later, Daddies ketchup was launched in 1930. Today, the H. J. Heinz Company owns the Daddies brand. They bought it in 2005 from a company called Groupe Danone. Before that, HP Foods owned it.
After Heinz bought the brand, the making of Daddies sauce moved to Poland.
The Original Recipe
The story of Daddies sauce goes back to 1899. A man named Edwin Samson Moore owned a company called Midland Vinegar Company in Birmingham, England. He went to visit one of his customers, Frederick Gibson Garton, who owed him money for vinegar.
Frederick Garton was a grocer in Nottingham. He also had a small factory behind his shop where he made sauces. While visiting, Edwin Moore saw a new sauce being made. Garton told him it was his new "Daddies Sauce."
Instead of asking for the money back, Moore made a deal. He cancelled Garton's debt. He also paid Garton £150 for the recipes of his sauces and chutneys. This included the special recipe for Daddies Sauce. That £150 was worth a lot of money back in 1899!
