HP Foods Limited was a company in England. It was famous for making popular sauces. These included HP Sauce, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce, and Daddies sauce. The company also helped bring the Chinese food brand Amoy Food to the UK.
History of HP Foods
The company started in 1875 in Aston, Birmingham. It was first known as the Midland Vinegar Company. Edward Eastwood and Edwin Samson Moore were its founders. Over time, the company changed its name. One of its names was Smedley HP Foods Limited.
In 1939, H.P. Sauce Ltd. made more than just HP Sauce. They also produced HP Tomato Ketchup and HP Salad Cream. Other products included HP Mayonnaise and a sweet pickle called Pickante. The company owned several smaller businesses. These included the Midland Vinegar Co. and Lea and Perrins.
Changes in Ownership
HP Foods Ltd. was bought by Imperial Foods. This was a part of the Imperial Group. Later, in 1988, a company called Groupe Danone SA bought HP Foods. They paid £199 million for it.
In 2005, Danone sold HP Foods to Heinz. This sale was for £470 million. The UK's Office of Fair Trading checked the deal. They sent it to the Competition Commission for review. The Competition Commission approved the takeover. After this, Heinz started to bring HP Foods into its business.
Factory Changes
In 2007, the original factory in Aston was taken down. The making of HP and Daddies sauce moved. Production went to the Netherlands.
However, the bottling of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce returned to Worcester. It had been moved to the Aston factory in 2005. The sauce itself continued to be made at the Midlands Road site.
