About the Book
This book is a children's book that teaches about how the U.S. government works. It uses funny characters like Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny to make learning about civics enjoyable.
What's the Story?
The book's story is like the classic "Rabbit Season/Duck Season" cartoons. In those cartoons, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Elmer Fudd argue about which hunting season it is. This book shows Daffy Duck trying to change the law. He wants to make "Duck Season" illegal forever. Instead, he wants it to always be "Rabbit Season."
Daffy's Big Idea
To change the law, Daffy decides to become a politician. He thinks if he's in charge, he can make any rule he wants. But Bugs Bunny helps him learn an important lesson.
Learning About Government
Through the story, Daffy learns about the United States Constitution. He finds out that "We the People" are in charge of the country. It's not just one person or even one duck! He also learns about the idea of separation of powers. This means the U.S. government is split into different parts. Each part has its own job, so no single part has too much power. The book makes this lesson easy to understand and very funny.
From Book to Screen
The book Daffy Duck for President was so popular that it became an animated short film.
The Animated Short Film
In 2004, Warner Bros. released a four-minute cartoon based on the book. This happened during the Presidential election that year. Spike Brandt, Tony Cervone, and Linda M. Steiner produced the film. It was made to honor Chuck Jones, who had passed away in 2002. The short film was even considered for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short in 2005.
Joe Alaskey provided the voices for both Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in the cartoon. There were plans to show the film in movie theaters worldwide. However, these plans changed after another movie, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, didn't do well at the box office. But fans could still see the short film! It was included as a special extra on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 2 DVD set. You can also find it on The Essential Daffy Duck DVD set.
