Dahnohabe (also called Dah-no-habe or Do-no-ha-be) was once a village or settlement of the Pomo people. The Pomo are a group of Native American people who have lived in what is now California for a very long time. This former settlement was located in Lake County, near Clear Lake. Today, its exact location is not known.

What Was Dahnohabe?

Dahnohabe was a place where Pomo families lived together. It was located on the western side of Clear Lake. This lake is one of the oldest lakes in North America. Even though we know it was near the lake, the exact spot where Dahnohabe stood is a mystery.

The Pomo People and Dahnohabe

The Pomo people have a rich history in California. They lived in many villages around the Clear Lake area. The people from Dahnohabe were part of these groups.

In 1852, several Pomo groups from the Clear Lake region met with a man named George Gibbs. He was an ethnologist, which means he studied different cultures and peoples. Gibbs learned about the Dahnohabe settlement during his visit. He wrote down that the name "Dahnohabe" means "stone mountain."
