Dalda is a well-known brand of cooking oil. It is a type of vegetable oil that has been specially treated. This oil is very popular in countries like India and Pakistan. People use it for cooking many different foods.
A Look Back at Dalda's History
In the 1930s, Dalda was first known as a Dutch company. This company brought a type of cooking fat called vanaspati ghee into India. It was a cheaper choice compared to desi ghee. Desi ghee is a traditional butter made from cow's milk. It was quite expensive for many families in British India back then. So, there was a need for a more affordable cooking fat.
In 1931, a company called Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Company was started. Their goal was to make this new type of vanaspati ghee locally. Before this, most of the treated vegetable oil in India was brought in by Hussein Dada. He sold his product under the name Dada Vanaspati. Lever Brothers, a big company, wanted to make their own version. They asked Hussein Dada if they could add the letter 'L' from Lever Brothers to his brand name. This would create the new name, Dalda. He agreed, and Dalda was introduced in 1937. It quickly became one of the oldest and most famous brands in India and Pakistan.
In 1939, Dalda had a very famous advertisement film. This film was part of India's first big advertising campaign that used many different types of media. The Dalda product became so well-known that the name "vanaspati ghee" often makes people think of Dalda. In 2003, the company that owned Dalda, Unilever, decided to sell the brand. This happened in both India and Pakistan.
Dalda in India
In 2003, a company called Bunge Limited bought the Dalda brand in India. They bought it from Hindustan Unilever Limited. After buying it, Bunge made Dalda an "umbrella brand." This means they used the Dalda name for many different types of cooking oils. These included oils like soyabean, sunflower, and Palmolive. The type of oil sold under the Dalda name would depend on the area in India.
Dalda in Pakistan
On March 30, 2004, Unilever Pakistan sold its Dalda brand in Pakistan. A new company called Dalda Foods (Pvt.) Limited bought it. This was a special deal because a group of six senior managers from Unilever bought the business themselves. They started their own company, Dalda Foods (Pvt.) Limited, with help from banks and a large oil importer. In 2017, Dalda Foods was planning to offer its shares on the Pakistan Stock Exchange.
