Dale Baum (born 1943) is an American historian and a professor. He taught for a long time at Texas A&M University. He studies the political history of the American Civil War and the time after it, called the Reconstruction era.

He also researches the history of Texas. Dr. Baum uses special methods to study history, like looking at numbers and data. He has written three books about history.

Early Life and Learning

Dale Baum was born in 1943 in New Jersey. He went to Georgetown University. In 1965, he earned a Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in history. This is usually the first degree you get from a university.

During the Vietnam War, Mr. Baum served in the United States Coast Guard. He was on active duty from 1967 to 1971. He then served in the Coast Guard Reserve until 1973.

He continued his studies at the University of Minnesota. In 1972, he earned a Master's degree (M.A.). This is a higher degree after a Bachelor's. He then earned his Ph.D. in history in 1978. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get.

While studying, he also worked as a teaching assistant. His Ph.D. paper was about how people voted. This paper later became his first book.

His Work as a Historian

Dr. Baum teaches about the political history of the American Civil War. He also teaches about the Reconstruction era. This was the time after the Civil War when the country was rebuilt. He also teaches about Texas history.

In 1978, he started teaching at Texas A&M University. He became a full professor in 1999. In 2005, he was a visiting professor in Korea. He taught at Yonsei University.

One of his books is called Counterfeit Justice (2009). This book tells the story of Azeline Hearne. She was a freedwoman in Texas after the Civil War. She faced many legal challenges. This happened after she inherited property from her former owner.
