J. Dale Wainwright was a judge on the highest court in Texas. He was born on June 19, 1961, in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Today, he works as a lawyer in Austin, Texas.
He was first elected to the Texas Supreme Court in 2002. He won another election in 2008. He left the court in 2012 after serving for almost 10 years. After leaving the court, he joined a law firm in Austin. Another judge, Jeffrey S. Boyd, took his place on the court.

Early Life and Education
J. Dale Wainwright graduated with high honors from Howard University. He studied economics there. During his college years, he also studied in London.
Later, he earned his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1988.
Becoming a Judge
In 1999, J. Dale Wainwright became a judge for the first time. He was appointed by then-Texas Governor George W. Bush. He served as a district judge in Harris County, Texas. He held this position until he was elected to the Texas Supreme Court.
Elections to the Supreme Court
2002 Election
In 2002, J. Dale Wainwright made history. He and Wallace B. Jefferson were the first African Americans to be elected to the Texas Supreme Court. Wainwright won his seat in this election. Like most judges on the state's highest court, Wainwright was a member of the Republican Party.
2008 Election
In 2008, Wainwright ran for re-election to the court. His main opponent was Sam Houston, a lawyer from the Democratic Party. Wainwright won the election with 51 percent of the votes. This gave him a new six-year term on the court.
Personal Life
J. Dale Wainwright is married to Debbie Wainwright. They have three sons named Jeremy, Phillip, and Joshua.
