Dalila Paola Méndez (born 1975) is an American visual artist. Her family comes from Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

Méndez creates art using painting, photography, and film. Her work often explores themes of being a woman, Latino culture, Indigenous heritage, and the African diaspora. She tells stories about identity and culture through her art.

Early Life and Education

Dalila Paola Méndez was born in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in the Echo Park and Silver Lake areas. As a child, she spent a lot of time in public libraries in Los Angeles. This is where she first discovered many different types of art.

Méndez says that taking art classes at Barnsdall Art Park in East Hollywood helped her fall in love with art. Her first way of making art was photography. She used her 35mm camera to explore colors and different subjects.

Méndez later earned her college degree in International Relations from the University of Southern California. She worked as a teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She taught English to children from immigrant families. After teaching, Méndez helped start an art group called Womyn Image Makers (WIM) in 1999. She co-founded it with Aurora Guerrero and other Chicanx artists.

  • The Goddess Within (2009). This painting uses acrylic on a canvas made of lava rock. It shows a ceiba tree shaped like a female body. Four female figures, a jaguar, and a quetzal bird are around the tree, offering gifts.
  • LA Re-Imagined (2010). This is an acrylic painting of the Los Angeles landscape. It mixes the city's urban look with the rural, artistic style of El Salvador.
  • We the Resilient (2020). This artwork uses mixed media on canvas. It is a collage that celebrates the lives of people like Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Andres Guardado. These individuals were victims of violence.
  • Feliciano Ama. This painting shows Feliciano Ama, a leader from the Salvadoran Civil War. He led a rebellion against the government. The painting shows him as a spiritual leader for his community. Méndez uses old stories to explore connections to Indigenous cultures. She uses her art to tell stories of strength and hope for communities of color.

Dalila Méndez has worked on several films. She has been a production designer and an art director. Since the early 2000s, Méndez has worked with other filmmakers from Womyn Image Makers (WIM), like Aurora Guerrero.
