Dalkeith is a very wealthy suburb in Perth, Western Australia. It is part of the City of Nedlands. Dalkeith is known for having some of the most expensive houses in Perth and all of Western Australia. For example, in 2021, the average house price here was about $2.9 million.

How Dalkeith Got Its Name

The name Dalkeith comes from a small house built in 1833. This house was called "Dalkeith Cottage." It was built by Captain Adam Armstrong and his sons. They were early settlers who arrived on a ship called Gilmore. Captain Armstrong used to manage an estate in Scotland for the Earl of Dalkeith. He named his new home in Australia after that place.

Old Houses and Land Sales

The land where Dalkeith Cottage stood was later bought by James Gallop. Around 1872, he built a two-storey house there, which is now known as Gallop House. In 1897, the farm was divided into many smaller pieces of land. These pieces were sold for people to build homes on. Gallop House is the oldest private home still standing in Dalkeith today.

Riverside Location and Famous Streets

Dalkeith is special because the Swan River surrounds it on three sides. This gives many homes beautiful water views. Jutland Parade is a very well-known street in Dalkeith. It is considered one of the most expensive streets in all of Perth.

Sunset Hospital History

Near the river in Dalkeith, there is an old hospital called Sunset Hospital. It was built in 1904. The hospital cared for people for many years but closed down in 1995. Some of the buildings at Sunset Hospital are very old and are protected because of their history.

Dalkeith's Idea to Form Its Own Area

In 2009, some people living in Dalkeith had an interesting idea. They wanted Dalkeith to become its own separate local government area. A local government area is like a small town or district that manages its own services.

Why They Wanted to Separate

The residents thought that Dalkeith could manage itself, just like the Shire of Peppermint Grove. Peppermint Grove is the smallest local government area in Australia. It was created in 1895 and has about 1,600 residents. The people in Dalkeith believed their suburb, with over 4,000 residents, was big enough to run its own services too. They felt it would be good for their community.
