Dalton Emani Makamau Tagelagi (born on June 5, 1968) is a very important person in Niue. He is the current Premier of Niue, which is like being the leader of the country. He became Premier in June 2020.
Dalton Tagelagi was chosen by the Niue Legislative Assembly, which is Niue's parliament. He won against another politician, O'Love Jacobsen, with 13 votes to 7. His father, Sam Pata Emani Tagelagi, was also a leader in Niue, serving as the Speaker of the Niue Legislative Assembly for many years.

Playing Bowls for Niue
Before becoming a full-time politician, Dalton Tagelagi was also a talented athlete. He played a sport called bowls for Niue. Bowls is a sport where players roll balls as close as possible to a smaller target ball.
He represented Niue in bowls at several big events:
- The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
- The 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
- The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he played in both the men's pairs and men's fours events.
Dalton Tagelagi's Journey in Politics
Dalton Tagelagi started his political journey when he was first elected to the Niue Assembly in 2008. The Niue Assembly is where laws are made for the country.
Early Roles in Government
After the 2014 election, he became the Minister of Infrastructure. This means he was in charge of things like roads and buildings. He was re-elected in 2017. Then, he became the Minister for the Environment, Natural Resources, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. This was a big role, looking after Niue's natural world.
As Environment Minister, he went to the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference. At this important meeting, he asked richer countries to do more to help stop climate change.
Becoming Premier of Niue
Dalton Tagelagi was re-elected to the Assembly in 2020. Soon after, he was chosen to be the Premier. When he became Premier, he said his first goal was to check on the government's money.
His government also approved the PACER Plus agreement. This is a special trade deal that helps countries in the Pacific region work together on trade.
Leading During Challenges
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Premier Tagelagi worked hard to keep Niue safe. He helped create a special travel arrangement with New Zealand. This allowed people from Niue to travel to New Zealand safely. He also made sure Niue had a successful vaccination program. This program helped Niue get "herd immunity," meaning most people were protected from the virus.
In November 2021, he also took on another important role. He became the Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific for one year. This is a big university that serves many Pacific island nations.
Re-election and New Cabinet
In the 2023 election, Dalton Tagelagi was re-elected to the Assembly without anyone running against him. He was then chosen again as Premier, winning against O'Love Jacobsen with 16 votes to 4.
On May 12, 2023, he announced his new team of ministers, called the Cabinet. This was a special moment for Niue. It was the first time the Cabinet had an equal number of men and women.
