Daly Castle, also known as Castledaly, is an old castle ruin in County Galway, Ireland. It was once called "Corbally." You can find it in the area known as Castledaly (which is called Irish: An Corrbhaile in Irish).

The Story of Daly Castle

Who Lived Here First?

In the late 1500s, Daly Castle, then known as Corbally, belonged to the Blake family. The Blakes were one of the famous "Tribes of Galway." These were fourteen important merchant families who were very powerful in Galway from the 1200s to the 1800s. They helped make Galway a busy and important trading city.

The Daly Family Takes Over

Later, in 1829, a man named Peter Daly bought the castle. His family, the Daly family, made many changes to the building. They added a new front, or "façade," to make it look different. After these changes, the castle was renamed Castledaly. It became an important home for James Daly starting in 1894.

A Nearby Church

Close to the castle, there's a church called St. Theresa's. It was built around 1850. The Daly family helped pay for it. Inside and near the church, you can find special memorial tablets and a family tomb for the Daly family.

What Does Daly Castle Look Like Now?

Today, most of Daly Castle is in ruins. Only the front part, the façade, is still standing. But even as a ruin, the castle is very interesting to archaeologists. This is because it includes parts of an even older building called a tower house. A tower house was a strong, tall building used for defense, and it was built into the castle's design.
